Frederick, M.D., MBA, hosted U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin III, and U.S. Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall to announce that Howard will serve as the 15th University Affiliated Research Center (UARC). With this announcement, Howard makes history as the first HBCU to lead a UARC and the first center to be funded by the Air Force.

Today, the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (CZI) announced a partnership with Howard University and the nation’s three other historically Black medical colleges to further support cutting-edge scientific research to address significant gaps in genomics. CZI’s Accelerate Precision Health (APH) program will award $11.5 million to Howard University over five years, allowing the University to expand research in the genome field, bring on renowned faculty, fund post-doctoral fellows, and support grant writing for future initiatives.

HU Research Week has been renamed HU Research Month (April 1- 29, 2022) in order to expand the opportunity to celebrate and honor the tremendous research that is conducted by our faculty, students and research staff. Research Month is part of our ongoing efforts to promote and celebrate the University’s research mission. Howard University’s research enterprise is comprised of many external grants and contracts, distinguished scholarly projects, and outstanding creative works. The Annual Research Symposium is the highlight of Research Month. It also provides a venue, in which to engage researchers and develop multidisciplinary collaborations. The week’s activities range from guest speakers and workshops to a research symposium aimed at creating more opportunities for innovation.
